OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Golden State Warriors forward Danny Fortson had surgery Wednesday to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.

Dr. Roger Mann of the Health South Surgery Center placed a screw into the bone to repair the fifth metatarsal. Mann said Fortson's foot will be immobilized for about eight weeks.

``It was in the best interest of both the organization and Danny Fortson to correct this problem and allow Danny to continue a long and prosperous career,'' general manager Garry St. Jean said.

Fortson, acquired from Boston in a four-team offseason trade, was leading the NBA in rebounding at 16.3 per game when he was injured. He also is averaging 16.7 points.
