SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ The president of Cuba's Olympic Committee, Manuel Gonzalez Guerra, died Friday in Havana, Cuba, at age 83, according to Puerto Rican Olympic official Hector Francisco Cardona.
Gonzalez Guerra was an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee.
Cardona said he received the news in a telephone call from Cuban Minister of Sports Reynaldo Gonzalez.
Manuel Gonzalez had suffered health problems for months and underwent open-heart surgery in March in Mexico.
``I'm saddened by the death of this great Cuban sports leader,'' said Cardona.
``Manolo was a great friend of Puerto Rico, regardless of political considerations,'' said German Rieckehoff, president of the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee. ``His death saddens me greatly.''
Gonzalez Guerra was one of the leaders of amateur baseball in Cuba.
