GUATEMALA CITY (AP) _ A court tribunal on Friday sentenced two men to 30 years in prison each for killing a journalist who had been critical of a public official.
Brothers Neftali and Jose Gabriel Lopez Leon were sentenced in Chiquimula, 65 miles east of the capital, Guatemala City.
The head of the tribunal, Nidia Dominguez, said the judges were also leaving open the case against the ex-mayor of the municipality of Jocotan, who is alleged to have masterminded the crime.
Jorge Luis Marroquin, chief of the weekly newspaper Sol Chorti de Jocotan, seven miles east of Chiquimula, often wrote articles that were critical of the mayor. He was slain on June 7.
