Five Killed By Mexico Gas Explosion
Dec. 12, 1993
CHILPANCINGO, Mexico (AP) _ Two gas tanks exploded at a local tortilla shop, killing five people, seriously injuring 23 and destroying eight homes Saturday, a news agency reported.
Three children, two ages 1 and 2, were among the five killed when the tanks exploded shortly after being refilled, Mayor Jorge Leon Robledo told the state-run Notimex news agency.
Eight homes and two cars were destroyed by the blast and the fire that followed, Leon Robledo said. It took firemen an hour to control the blaze.
Authorities have arranged for temporary shelter for those who lost their homes in this city 130 miles south of Mexico City, the agency said.
The mayor blamed the gas company ''Gas Mundial'' for the explosion. He said company employees, after filling the tanks with 111 gallons of gas, left the tubing improperly connected, which caused the leak and explosion.
