HOUSTON (AP) _ A drug suspect opened fire on police officers making a narcotics bust late Tuesday, killing one officer and leaving another in critical condition, authorities said.

Houston Police Department spokesman Robert Hurst said the officers were attempting to arrest four suspects for narcotics possession at a Houston apartment complex when the shooting occurred.

Hurst said three suspects were in custody. Another who had been shot in the leg was hospitalized.

Their names had not been released, but the slain officer was said to be a 32-year-old, seven-year veteran of the Houston Police Department.

The wounded officer underwent surgery early Wednesday and was listed in critical condition.

The slain officer was the second in Harris County to be shot to death Tuesday. Joseph Dennis, 35, a sheriff's deputy, was fatally shot by an 18-year-old man.

``It's hard to deal with,'' police officer Dutch Taylor said. ``Everybody's pretty upset right now, sad it had to happen to one of our own.''
