AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Fishing is free on Saturday and Sunday on Maine's waterways, meaning anyone without a license can fish on the state's nearly 6,000 lakes and 30,000 miles of rivers and streams.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage says he hopes more people will be introduced to winter fishing, but also warned everyone to think about safety first.

The Maine Warden Service is advising using an ice chisel or ice auger to test the thickness of ice in several locations on a lake or pond.

Bag and possession limits apply, and those who've had their licenses suspended or revoked can't fish.

The next free fishing weekend is June 3 and 4.
