DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) _ A crowded ferry sank in a river, killing at least 27 people, mostly women and children, an official said Saturday. Another 30 people were missing.
The ferry, carrying about 150 people, sank in Meghna River on Friday near Bhola town, 65 miles south of Dhaka, the official said. About 100 people were either rescued by fishermen or swam ashore.
The ferry was carrying twice its licensed capacity. It was on a 1 run between the islands of Char Tajimuddin and Char Zahiruddin, said Sekandar Ali Mandol, the area's administrator.
The water was about 50 feet deep.
