NEW YORK (AP) _ The Joffrey Ballet has cancelled a series of appearances in China because of the recent unrest in that country, a spokeswoman for the ballet said Wednesday.

The 40-person company was to have been the United States' official representative at the China Arts Festival in Beijing. The ballet's executive director, Penelope Curry, made the decision to not participate in the festival.

The company had scheduled several performances from Sept. 15 to Sept. 20 in Beijing.

It would have been the ballet's first trip to China.

A spokeswoman for the ballet said the government's crackdown on pro- democracy demonstrators in Beijing led to the cancellation.
