SEATTLE (AP) _ Gary Payton scored 20 of his season-high 43 points in the fourth quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Los Angeles Clippers 101-90 on Thursday night for their fifth straight win.

Payton was one shy of equaling his career high of 44 points, set against Minnesota last season. He shot 18-of-27 in 45 minutes, had six assists, eight rebounds and no turnovers.

Rashard Lewis added 16 points for the Sonics, who beat the Clippers for the 16th time in their last 17 meetings in Seattle. Seattle also evened its record at 15-15.

Corey Maggette led the Clippers with 25 points, and Jeff McInnis added 20 and Elton Brand 16.

Lewis broke a 73-73 tie with a 3-pointer with 6:30 left, and he added another basket on a runner. He tipped away a pass that led to another basket and an 80-75 lead.

The Sonics led 67-65 after three quarters, but Seattle outscored the Clippers 34-25 in the final quarter.

Down 53-47 early in the third period, the Sonics scored 10 straight points for a 57-53 lead with 6:52 left in the third period. Desmond Mason tied it with a two-handed jam after stealing the ball and driving in from midcourt.

Sean Rooks' basket gave the Clippers a 49-47 halftime lead. Los Angeles shot 21-of-21 from the free-throw line in the first half, including 13-for-13 in the second quarter.

Notes: Clippers forward Lamar Odom missed the game after spraining a wrist Wednesday against Philadelphia. ... Lewis missed the last 7:33 of the first half after getting elbowed in the upper lip by Maggette. He returned with 3:03 left in the third period after getting eight stitches to close the cut. ... The Clippers are 1-7 on their road. Their only win away from the Staples Center was at Phoenix on Dec. 18.
