EASTON, Md. (AP) _ A man who pleaded guilty to blackmailing the owner of Spectacular Bid, 1980 Horse of the Year, was sentenced Tuesday to 14 days in jail and four years' probation.

Talbot County Circuit Judge John C. North also ordered Mark Andrew Shannahan, 20, to continue psychological treatment, pay court costs, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and write a letter of apology to Harry Meyerhoff.

Meyerhoff, who owns the thoroughbred horse along with his wife, Theresa, and his son, Scott, was blackmailed last summer for allegedly taking drugs into an inn he owns at St. Michaels. A police investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by Meyerhoff.

Shannahan was charged on Aug. 15 with extortion, two counts of sending and delivering a threatening letter and verbally threatening Meyerhoff. The state dropped all charges except extortion in exchange for the guilty plea.
