Ginger Rogers Prepares To Celebrate 75th Birthday
Jul. 15, 1986
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Ginger Rogers, Oscar-winning actress and legendary dance partner of Fred Astaire, didn't wait around for a big party to celebrate her 75th birthday.
She was reported en route from her Palm Springs home to her Oregon ranch Tuesday, the eve of her birthday.
''The trip takes her three days by car, so she'll be out of reach on her birthday,'' said her agent, Barry Freed.
''Ginger is in terrific shape and plays tennis and golf every day,'' Freed said. ''She does a lot of traveling and many television interviews, including a recent one for BBC on the history of the RKO studio.''
He added that Miss Rogers is considering an offer to star in ''On Golden Pond'' on stage in London.
Miss Rogers was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Mo., on July 16, 1911. She grew up in Texas and first found fame as a Charleston dancer in vaudeville, then as a Broadway performer in ''Girl Crazy.''
Her film career began in 1930 and 10 years later she won an Oscar for best actress in ''Kitty Foyle.''
Her film career has included a wide range of dramas and comedies, but her greatest fame came with the Astaire-Rogers musical classics such as ''Top Hat'' and ''Gay Divorcee.''
