One Killed, Several Injured in Balcony Collapse
Feb. 18, 1996
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ A wooden balcony that may have been weakened by recent rains collapsed Saturday night during a party, killing one woman and injuring at least a dozen others.
The third-floor balcony tore away from the back of a Victorian home in the Pacific Heights District, the Fire Department reported.
One woman was declared dead at the scene. She was not immediately identified.
At least 12 people who were on the balcony at the time were hospitalized. Four were listed in critical condition, officials said.
``It sounded like a tree falling,'' said Mike Self, who was at the party. ``It just went down.''
