Pro-abortion rights PAC backing Markey Senate bid
Feb. 28, 2013
BOSTON (AP) — A major pro-abortion rights political action committee is endorsing Congressman Edward Markey in the Democratic primary ahead of the state's special U.S. Senate election.
Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said the group is backing Markey because he is the only candidate who has shown what she called "a steadfast commitment to protecting reproductive freedom and privacy."
Markey is facing off against fellow U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary.
Lynch opposes abortion, though he has said he does not advocate for the repeal of Roe vs. Wade and has supported funding for Planned Parenthood.
Markey said women should have access to the full range of reproductive health care choices.
NARAL Pro-Choice America was a strong supporter of Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren against former Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown last year.
