BEIJING (AP) — Former world champion Philippe Gilbert won the second stage of Tour of Beijing by overtaking Janse van Rensburg in the last meters on Saturday.

The second stage was shortened to 111 kilometers due to poor air quality in the morning at the stage's intended finish in Yanqing and instead ended at Yan Ping Village.

Gilbert clocked 2 hours, 29 minutes, 2 seconds after his late surge to pass Van Rensburg just before the finish line.

Rui Costa, another former world champion, came third.

Gilbert took over red leader's jersey with a five-second lead over Van Rensburg. Overnight leader Luka Mezgec finished in 41st and is now 16 seconds behind Gilbert.
