SEATTLE (AP) _ Free agent Bill Swift, Seattle's fifth starter last season, agreed to a minor league contract with the Mariners on Friday and was invited to spring training.

Swift, 37, was 11-9 with a 5.85 ERA in 26 starts last year.

``Bill will come to camp in the mix for the fifth starter job,'' Mariners general manager Woody Woodward said. ``He pitched well for us last season and he's a veteran pitcher who has had success in the past as both a starter and as a reliever.''

Swift began in his career in Seattle, which made him its first-round draft pick in 1984 and kept him through 1991. The right-hander rejoined the Mariners last year after stints with San Francisco and Colorado.
