KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) _ Frankie Minoza of the Philippines fired a 4-under-par 68 Saturday for a 201 and maintained his lead in the Malaysian Masters golf championship.

Sufian Tan of Malaysia carded a 71 over the 18 holes of the Royal Selangor Golf Club course to retain second place, four strokes behind the leader.

Taiwan's Hsieh Chin-san and Pakistan's Ghulam Nabi were tied for third with a three-round total of 208.

The winner will earn $24,000.


TOKYO (AP) - The Yokohama Taiyo Whales edged the Hanshin Tigers 4-3 in Japanese baseball Saturday. Cecil Fielder hit his 38th home run in a losing cause for the Tigers.

Fielder, formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays, leads the Central League in homers.

Mike Diaz, formerly of the Chicago White Sox, hit his 32nd homer, a solo shot, as the Lotte Orions beat the Seibu Lions 2-1.


PARIS (AP) - American synchronized swimmers finished off a triple victory Saturday by taking the team event at the fourth World Cup.

Tracy Long led the team and picked up her third gold medal of the competition. She previously won the solo and duet routines.

Her partner in the duet, Michele Svitenko, was a member of the winning squad along with Becky Dyroen, Patti Lynn, Lori McKoy, Jill Savery, Heather Simmons and Nathalie Schneider.

The Americans totaled 188.9432 points to defeat Canada, the defending world champion. The Canadians were second with 188.8595. and Japan finished third with 186.7058.

The American team also took the overall competition based on the results of the three events with 63 points. Canada beat Japan for second, 47-44.


LONDON (AP) - Teddy Sheringham scored twice in the opening 13 minutes to lead Millwall to a 4-1 home victory Saturday over Coventry, boosting the Lions to the top of the English League First Division soccer standings and ending Coventry's brief reign.

Everton climbed into second place, handing Manchester United its third defeat of the season, 3-2. Mike Newell, Kevin Sheedy and Graeme Sharp gave the hosts a 3-0 lead after 53 minutes and Everton then survived a late United rally.

Millwall has 11 points, beginning its second season in Division 1 with a string of five games without a loss. The Lions were undefeated through their first eight games last season, but slumped at the end to finish in 10th place.

Coventry had entered the game in first place for the only time in its 106 years in the league. The loss dropped Coventry to fourth place.

Norwich fell a notch to third place by managing only a 4-4 tie at home with Southampton.
