Panthers Sign Matthews, Dump Barber

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ The Carolina Panthers re-signed Shane Matthews on Thursday, giving them another quarterback while Steve Beuerlein recovers from a knee injury.
Matthews was originally signed by Carolina before the start of the season but was released on Sept. 16 after Kerry Collins returned to his starting job following surgery for a broken jaw.
The Panthers elected to carry Beuerlein and Collins as their only quarterbacks, but Beuerlein strained a ligament in his right knee in last week's loss to Minnesota and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in New Orleans.
As was the case when he was first signed by Carolina, Matthews was on a golf course in Gainesville, Fla., when the Panthers called Wednesday.
``When you're unemployed, there's not much to do,'' said Matthews, a fifth-year pro who has yet to play a down for the Panthers. ``I don't know how long I'll be here. I could be gone next week.''
Beuerlein said he should be able to serve as Collins' top backup Sunday when Carolina (2-4) tries to break a three-game losing skid.
``I really feel comfortable saying that by Sunday I should be ready to play if the situation came up,'' he said.
To clear a roster spot for Matthews, the Panthers waived fullback Kantroy Barber, who was claimed off the waiver wire from New England on Aug. 25 and had not been activated for any of Carolina's games.
