COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man who ministered to homeless people in a South Carolina park has died after being punched in the face by a man asking him for money.
Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said 81-year-old John Bagley died Sept. 26 in his Irmo home, 16 days after he was attacked in Columbia's Finley Park.
Timmons says 42-year-old Corey Todd asked for money before punching Bagley. Timmons says a murder charge was filed after detectives reviewed medical reports.
Bagley's family told media outlets Bagley often came to the park to minister to the homeless.
Bagley's son Keith says his father didn't initially tell his family he was punched, but started suffering terrible headaches and had a doctor's appointment the day he died.
It wasn't known if Todd has a lawyer.
