High-Rise Fire Kills One
Dec. 01, 1996
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Fire raced through a high-rise building housing mostly elderly people, killing one person Sunday and sending 32 others to the hospital.
Firefighters had trouble evacuating Royal Tower, a 10-story building downtown, because many of its 193 residents have medical problems and were unable to use stairwells, acting Fire Chief Rick Brisbin said. Some were carried down ladders.
The fire started in a second floor apartment and most of those taken to the hospital suffered from smoke inhalation, Brisbin said. Others suffered bumps and bruises from falls.
The dead victim was not immediately identified.
Several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion.
