AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) _ Geo. A. Hormel & Co. announced Thursday that it purchased Chicken by George Inc., the Louisville, Ky., company founded by former Miss America Phyllis George. The price was not disclosed.
Under terms of the agreement, Hormel will acquire all the assets of Chicken by George and operate the company as a separate division.
''This agreement fits well with our company's long-term business strategies,'' Hormel Chairman R.L. Knowlton said in a statement.
''The line of high quality, convenient chicken entrees marketed by Chicken by George will complement greatly the products currently produced by our company.''
Founded by Miss George in 1986, Chicken by George has built a strong base business in Kentucky with an eight-item line of fresh, marinated chicken breast entrees.
Knowlton said Miss George will be actively involved in all facets of new product development, marketing and promotion for chicken products as well as an expanded line of beef, pork, fish and turkey products, all under the By George brand name.
