Chivas USA Holds on to Defeat Rapids 1-0
Sep. 24, 2006
CARSON, Calif. (AP) _ Francisco Mendoza scored in the 34th minute and Chivas USA held on to defeat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 Saturday night. With the win, Chivas (10-7-12) moved one point ahead of Houston into second place in the Western Conference.
If Chivas wins next week, they could eliminate the Los Angeles Galaxy from the playoffs and move within a point of clinching their first postseason berth. Chivas finished in last place last year with four wins. Goalkeeper Brad Guzan picked up his third consecutive shutout.
Colorado (11-12-6) tied the Galaxy 0-0 last week, but could not keep Chivas scoreless despite playing the same tight defense. Clint Mathis had the Rapids' best scoring chance of the first half when he pounced on a loose ball in the 32nd minute. The shot was just wide of an empty goal.
