Maine's fall hunting seasons get started with youth bear day
Aug. 25, 2018
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine's youngest hunters are headed to the woods for the state's annual youth bear hunting day.
The fall bear hunt kicks off on Saturday with youth day, which takes place everywhere in the state that hunting is allowed. Licensed junior hunters are allowed to take bears with a firearm, bow and arrow or crossbow.
Some Maine hunters pursue bears with the use of hunting dogs, but that's not allowed on youth day. However, young hunters are allowed to set bait to attract the bears, which can easily weigh more than 300 pounds.
Normal laws that apply to the hunting of bears in Maine apply. Hunters are advised to check the rules with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife before hunting.
