NEW YORK (AP) _ Infielder Jorge Velandia became a free agent when the New York Mets declined to offer him a 2001 contract Wednesday.

Velandia was 0-for-7 in two games with the Mets last season and 3-for-24 (.125) with two RBIs for Oakland,

The Mets also declined to offer contracts to pitchers Pat Mahomes and Lariel Gonzalez, and infielder Matt Franco. All three had been designated for assignment Dec. 13.

``With each of them, we will at least have some discussion to talk about whether we'd have interest in bringing them back and signing them to a minor league deal or a deal that doesn't bind us to arbitration,'' Mets general manager Steve Phillips said.

Just two Mets are eligible for arbitration: pitchers Glendon Rusch and Rick White.
