ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) _ Paraguay will hold presidential and congressional elections on Apr. 27, the country's electoral board announced Monday.
The nationwide balloting will be the fourth in this landlocked South American country since civilian rule was restored in 1989, ending a 35-year dictatorship led by military strongman Alfredo Stroessner.
As part of the newly announced election timetable, current president Luis Gonzalez Macchi will step down from office on Aug. 15, said electoral board spokesman Carlos Maria Ljubetic.
Gonzalez Macchi's Colorado Party has been the ruling party in Paraguay since 1947, supported by both civilain presidents and Stroessner. The party's candidate for president is widely expected to be the frontrunner in April's elections.
