HONG KONG (AP) _ A small fire broke out in the cargo hold of a Lufthansa Boeing 747 with 263 passengers aboard shortly after it took off, forcing the plane back to Hong Kong, an airline spokesman said Saturday.

No one was injured in the incident, said Claus Dehio, public relations manager for the German airline.

The jetliner landed Friday, 18 minutes after leaving the British colony for Bangkok, because smoke warning signals were activated in the rear cargo compartment, Dehio said.

The fire extinguishing system aboard the jetliner put out the fire before the plane landed in Hong Kong, he said. Dehio said the blaze was believed caused by overheating in the cargo area.
