BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Scott Dochat stopped St. Peter's quarterback Jeremy Bartuck at the one-foot line on Saturday to preserve Canisius' 12-7 win over the Peacocks.

Starting from their own 27-yard-line with 1:09 to play, St. Peter's marched down the field on a 36-yard pass from Bartuck to tight end Russ Snyder and a 13-yard completion to Eric Carricarte that put the ball on the one-foot line with seven seconds left. But the Canisius defense stuffed two scoring tries, including Bartuck's keeper, as time ran out.

Defense was key to the Golden Griffins' victory, forcing five turnovers and sacking Bartuck eight times. Canisius defensive end Frank Zabawa had three sacks, increasing his school career record to 19.

Canisius struck first with 3:05 remaining in the first quarter on an 11-yard scoring run by Hayward Rodgers, who had 63 yards on 13 carries for the day. The brief drive was set up by defensive back Shane Hurd, who returned an interception 21 yards to St. Peter's 24-yard-line.

St. Peter's tied the score 7-7 with 12:31 left in the half when tailback Tom Reali scored from the one-yard-line.

Canisius countered with 3:55 left in the third quarter when Dustin Bakowski kicked a 42-yard field goal, the third longest in Canisius history, to make it 10-7.

Zabawa wrapped up the scoring with 6:07 left in the game when he wrapped up Bartuck in the end zone for a safety.

Reali gained 95 yards on 23 carries for St. Peter's, and also caught a 20-yard pass during St. Peter's lone touchdown drive. Bartuck was 5-for-17 passing for 94 yards, and was intercepted twice.
