WASHINGTON (AP) — Police say an 11-year-old girl was one of multiple people shot on the Fourth of July in the District of Columbia.
Chanel Dickerson with the Metropolitan Police Department told news outlets that the girl told police she was struck by an unknown object while playing in a southeast Washington alley on Wednesday night. Police found 37 shell casings and said the girl's injuries were consistent with gunshot wounds.
The police report says the gunfire did not appear directed at anyone. The shooter ran off and no arrests have been made.
Her injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. Dickerson said multiple people negligently fired guns across the city, with at least seven others were July 4. While no deaths were reported, one man was in grave condition Thursday.
