LONDON (AP) _ Premier League leader Manchester United was ousted from the fourth round of the F.A. Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough.

Noel Whelan scored in the 85th minute and Andy Campbell added a goal in the 89th against a Manchester United defense plagued by poor defense.

Manchester United rested many starters after a 1-0 loss during the week to Liverpool. United has won the F.A. Cup 10 times, the last one in 1999.

Middlesbrough is managed by Steve McLaren, who joined the team this season after being a longtime assistant to Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.

This was the last F.A. Cup game for Ferguson, who will retire after the season.

``It was a careless, scrappy performance by us,'' Ferguson said. ``To give that game away is ridiculous.''
