Airline Crew Finds Heroin Stash
Apr. 25, 1998
MIAMI (AP) _ When an American Airlines flight crew brewed up a pot of java that looked a little weak but carried a strong punch, it led to the discovery of 15 pounds of heroin disguised as coffee.
The heroin was discovered on a flight from Cali, Colombia to Miami International Airport at the beginning of the month, said Martha Pantin, an airline spokeswoman.
The heroin was hidden in coffee packaging. The crew discovered it when they brewed a pot and saw that it didn't look quite right, Pantin said.
No passengers were served the fresh-brewed narcotic, Pantin said. She didn't know if any flight crew members were served a cup of the strange brew.
American Airlines radioed authorities to tell them about the discovery before landing in Miami, Pantin said.
Pantin said the airline has an extensive program to prevent the use of its planes to smuggle drugs.
``We spend millions of dollars to avoid this,'' she said.
Pantin said the incident was reported to the U.S. Customs Service, but officials there weren't available for comment Friday night.
