MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) _ More than 50 pilgrims died in a stampede during a hajj ritual Sunday, slipping and falling in the crush of people throwing pebbles at stone pillars symbolizing the devil, a Saudi security official said.

``The number of deaths from this morning's stampede is more than 50 pilgrims,'' Capt. Ahmed al-Rawdan told The Associated Press by telephone from Mina.

He said it was difficult to establish an exact figure ``because there are tens wounded, some of them seriously.''

He said policemen were among those wounded.
