HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Inexplicable wore down heavily favored Band Is Passing in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the $160,000 Canadian Turf Handicap on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

David Copperfield, rallying from next to last, was third in a field of eight going a mile and a sixteenth.

Carrying 115 pounds and Jose Santos, Inexplicable was timed in 1:39.40, a fifth of a second off the course record. The 6-year-old son Kentucky-bred son of Miswaki paid $12.80, $4.40 and $3.40. Band Is Passing returned $2.80 and $2.20, and David Copperfield paid $2.80 to show.

Inexplicable is owned by Lucy Young Boutin. He won four times last year, including the Grade III New Hampshire Sweepstakes Handicap, and finished second four times. He has earned $437,640.
