PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) _ A Marine recruit died following a blow to the head during hand-to-hand combat training.
Life support for Michael J. Cecil, 19, of New Haven, Ky., was removed at his parents' request, the Marine Corps said. He died early Tuesday morning.
Cecil was hit in the head by another recruit during supervised boxing on Friday. During the three rounds of 15 seconds each, recruits wear protective headgear, gloves, mouth guards and groin protectors.
Cecil was wearing the protective gear and was supervised by a drill instructor at the time, said Maj. Rick Long, a Marine spokesman. He said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, an outside agency, investigates all recruit training deaths.
``The medical reports will tell us if there was a pre-existing condition that was the cause,'' of the injury, Long said.
