SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A California sheriff whose office has arrested three correctional deputies in the fatal beating of a mentally ill inmate says she is broadening her investigation of brutality complaints at Santa Clara County Jail.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith told the San Jose Mercury News (http://bayareane.ws/1YRly0e ) in a story Wednesday that her office is investigating as many as 100 use-of-force complaints filed after the inmate died.
Eight correctional deputies have been removed from duty since inmate Michael Tyree was found in his jail cell on Aug, 26, bleeding from internal injuries.
Smith says her office has turned to retired internal affairs deputies to pursue the investigation.
Smith says she will be relentless and is open to civilian oversight.
