Police Arrest Suspect In Killing of Abortion Doctor
Sep. 04, 1993
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) _ Robbery apparently was the motive in the Aug. 21 killing of an abortion doctor who had worked with another abortion doctor slain earlier this year, police said Saturday.
Winston McCoy, 42, was charged with murder late Friday in the fatal shooting of Dr. George Wayne Patterson.
Mobile Police Department spokesman Tom Jennings said no link existed between the shooting and Patterson's medical practice. Police instead believe the doctor was shot to death during a robbery, Jennings said.
Witnesses said the shooting occurred as Patterson was getting into his 1993 Cadillac outside an adult movie theater.
Patterson was the only doctor at the Family Planning clinic in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., about 90 miles east of Mobile, said administrator Sandra Sheldon.
The doctor who sometimes filled in for Patterson, Dr. David Gunn, was killed in March during an anti-abortion demonstration outside Women's Medical Services in Pensacola, Fla. Anti-abortion activist Michael F. Griffin faces trial Sept. 20 for the slaying. Pensacola is about 70 miles east of Mobile.
