Bus Crashes in Himalayans, 20 Dead
May. 11, 1998
NEW DELHI, India (AP) _ A bus skidded off a narrow road during heavy rain, rolled down a Himalayan mountain and plunged into a river Sunday in India, killing at least 20 people, news reports said.
Twenty-three passengers were injured in the accident near the village of Kankarghat, about 180 miles north of New Delhi, United News of India reported.
The bus, returning from the Hindu holy town of Rudraprayag, tumbled into the rain-swollen Mandakini River, the news agency said.
Workers recovered 20 bodies from the site, despite a downpour and fallen trees that hindered rescue efforts, Press Trust of India news agency reported.
Such accidents are common on the poorly maintained mountain roads. Last week, a bus fell into a gorge in the area, killing 29 people.
