Puerto Rican Forest Trail Opens
Apr. 14, 2000
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ The Caribbean National Forest on Friday reopened a main rain forest hiking trail that was badly damaged by a hurricane in 1998.
The El Yunque Trail, which takes its name from the informal name of the rain forest, had been closed by landslides caused by Hurricane Georges in September 1998, the U.S. Forest Service said.
Volunteers helped complete repairs, which were delayed by months of wet weather, the forest service said.
The 2.3-mile trail goes to the peak of El Yunque, nearly 3,500 feet above sea level.
Forest Service spokeswoman Carolyn Krupp said hikers might have been using the trail before Friday, but the agency wanted to run additional safety checks before reopening it.
