Cubs Make Pitching Moves
Aug. 26, 1999
CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Kevin Tapani on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a sore lower back.
The Cubs made the move after Thursday's game. Before the game, the team recalled right-handed reliever Rodney Myers and optioned reliever Steve Rain to Triple-A Iowa.
Tapani, who was 0-9 in his last 10 starts, will stay in Chicago to undergo tests rather than go with the Cubs for a West Coast trip, which begins Friday in Los Angeles.
``It's probably the right thing to do considering where we are in the season,'' Tapani said.
``Under the circumstances, it's better to shut him down,'' Cubs manager Jim Riggleman said.
Right-hander Kyle Farnsworth was recalled from Iowa and will start Sunday for the Cubs. Farnsworth was 2-7 with a 6.17 ERA with the major league team.
Myers, who was in uniform for Thursday's game, was making his second appearance this year with the Cubs. In 32 relief appearances from April 14-July 8, he was 3-1 with a 5.49 ERA. In 20 games at Iowa, Myers was 2-4 with two saves and a 4.11 ERA.
Rain was 0-1 with a 9.20 ERA, giving up 28 hits and walking seven over 14 2-3 innings over 16 games.
