Former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro was soundly defeated by a House lawmaker Tuesday in the campaign to challenge GOP Sen. Alfonse D'Amato. Massachusetts Democrats sent their attorney general into the fall election against an incumbent GOP governor.

On the year's final busy primary night, Rep. Charles Schumer topped New York's four-way Democratic field that included the only woman ever to run on a major party presidential ticket. Ferraro had said this would be her last comeback bid.
