Celtics: no comment on report that Pitino offers Carlesimo Boston GM job
May. 13, 1997
BOSTON (AP) _ The Boston Celtics said Tuesday they have no comment on a report that new coach Rick Pitino has offered the general manager's job to former Portland Trail Blazers coach P.J. Carlesimo.
The New York Post reported Tuesday that Pitino, hired to coach the Celtics on May 6, made the offer shortly after Carlesimo was fired by the Trail Blazers on May 8. The two are friends and former Big East rivals _ Pitino coached Providence while Carlesimo was at Seton Hall.
Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Tuesday that the team had no timetable or comment regarding the general manager's job.
The Post reported that Carlesimo, who had a 137-109 record in the past three seasons with Portland, would like to stay in the NBA as a coach, but is not considered a leading candidate for the available positions in Golden State, Vancouver or Denver.
Carlesimo coached Seton Hall for 12 years before taking the Portland job in 1994. He led the Trail Blazers to the playoffs all three seasons he was at Portland, but they were eliminated in the first round all three times.
