Mental exam ordered for woman accused of slashing corpse

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A woman accused of slashing the corpse of her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend at a funeral home viewing will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and return to court next month, a judge agreed Wednesday.
The mental competency exam for Shaynna Sims had been requested by her attorneys and approved Wednesday by Tulsa County Special Judge David Youll.
She's to return to court July 8, when the results of the competency exam will be discussed. A preliminary hearing for Sims won't be held until after that, her defense attorney said after the request was signed.
Chad Greer, Sims' attorney, said his client's competency exam will be arranged through his office. He didn't comment on the allegations Sims is accused of, but said she remains in good spirits.
"We're actually doing pretty well, considering, I guess, the stress that normally comes with these allegations," Greer said in a telephone interview after the hearing. "It brings its own stressors, but she's holding up pretty well."
During Wednesday's hearing, Sims did not respond to questions from the AP while she was seated in the packed courtroom. A woman who accompanied her to the hearing also did not respond to questions about the case.
Sims was arrested at the dead woman's apartment after attending a viewing April 30. Police say Sims stole the woman's shoes and was carrying a knife with the woman's hair attached to it. Authorities have been attempting to determine a motive for Sims' actions but said she's been uncooperative.
Witnesses told officers they saw Sims reach into the casket during the viewing. The dead woman's face was slashed, her makeup was smeared and her hair was on the floor, police said.
Sims faces four felonies: unauthorized removal of body parts from a dead body; larceny from a person; knowingly concealing or receiving stolen property; and first-degree burglary. She also is charged with two misdemeanors of unauthorized dissection and disturbing or interrupting a funeral.
