Police concerned DMV computers may hinder investigations

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The administrator of the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles says he plans to speak with law enforcement after hearing their concerns about retaining information on unregistered vehicles.
Under a system that went live in July, drivers with expired registrations are deleted after 90 days. WPRI-TV reports the change has made it more difficult to track drivers suspected of a crime.
Administrator Walter Craddock says he first learned of the concerns in October, but has been aware of ongoing conversations since then.
Warwick Police Maj. Rick Rathburn says the issue affects both enforcement and investigations, noting that without accurate information, police may have more difficulty tracking down suspects.
Craddock said he plans to meet with the police chiefs association in the next week to discuss the matter.
