WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ Defending champion Conchita Martinez rallied from a set down Wednesday to beat Magdalena Maleeva and reach the quarterfinals of the $180,000 WTA Polish Open.

Spain's Martinez, seeded first, defeated Bulgaria's Maleeva 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Second-seeded Anke Huber also advanced to the final eight, eliminating Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-3, 6-3.

In other singles matches, fifth-seeded Gala Leon Garcia beat Rita Grande of Italy 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-3; fourth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland defeated Sandra Nacuk of Yugoslavia 6-2, 5-7, 6-3; and third-seeded Barbara Schett beat Karina Habsudova 6-0, 6-4.
