BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ The Buffalo Sabres signed center Stu Barnes on Thursday, leaving five players unsigned as the regular season approaches.

Terms were not disclosed. Barnes, acquired from Pittsburgh in March, scored seven playoff goals as the Sabres advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. Barnes came to training camp without a contract and has one goal in three preseason games.

``Every move for me has been a positive thing,'' he said. ``Hopefully we can get back to the Stanley Cup finals.''

The Sabres are still missing Miroslav Satan, last season's leading scorer, center Curtis Brown, right wing Vaclav Varada and defensemen Rhett Warrener and Jay McKee.

``It shows that there's some movement now,'' coach Lindy Ruff said. ``The other guys might follow.''
