NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Arvis Chalmers, a reporter who covered New York state's capital through six governors and 36 legislative sessions, died Tuesday of injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 79.
Chalmers began his journalism career in 1945, writing obituaries for The Journal in Ogdensburg, N.Y. Two years later, he joined The Knickerbocker News of Albany and soon was covering the Court of Claims and state agencies.
In four decades of newspaper work, he won awards from the New York State Publishers Association, the state Associated Press Association and the Legislative Correspondents Association. He retired in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Flora Chalmers.
