NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Ki-Jana Carter, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft, was cut Sunday by the New Orleans Saints before their game with San Francisco.

Carter appeared to have won the job of backup running back behind Deuce McAllister after training camp.

The Saints also signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith from their practice squad. The defensive line was thin, with defensive tackle Brian Young and defensive ends Darren Howard and Melvin Williams not suiting up for the game.
