INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Epitanio Perez scattered 10 hits and Ariel Deleado had three hits and drove in two runs as Nicaragua defeated the Netherlands Antilles 5-0 in Pan American Games baseball action Monday.
The victory gave Nicaragua a 1-0 record in its first of seven round-robin games leading to the medal round.
Canada was to meet Venezuela and Cuba was to play Puerto Rico in later games at Bush Stadium.
Perez went the distance, striking out three and walking none.
Cayetano Garcia, Julio Medina and Tomas Guzman added two hits apiece to Nicaragua's 13-hit attack.
Nicaragua ended the scoring with three runs in the seventh, one scoring on a single by Nemesio Porras and two unearned runs on an error.
Nicaraguan rightfielder Roger Peralta broke his leg in the second inning while attempting to break up a double play at second. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital.
Arthur Bonevacia took the loss for the Antilles, now 0-2. Hensley Martinus had three hits for the Antilles.
