READING, Pa. (AP) — The attorney representing a man on trial in the stabbing death of a 16-year-old Pennsylvania youth says her client acted in self-defense.
Thirty-year-old Avery Valentin-Bair is charged with first-degree murder in the September 2016 death of high school sophomore Christian Torres in Reading (REH'-ding).
Berks County prosecutors say the victim and others were wearing Halloween masks and riding bikes around the neighborhood, and a confrontation developed with a neighbor who believed they were trying to scare younger children. The Reading Eagle reports that prosecutors argue that the situation had calmed until the defendant revved up passions again.
Defense attorney Abby Rigdon argues that Valentin-Bair was being beaten by the youth and others and pulled a knife to try to escape, but a single stab hit the victim's heart.
