GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (AP) _ Argentina, looking tired and unimpressive, was beaten 1-0 by Ecuador in a World Cup tuneup Wednesday night.
Byron Tenorio scored on a beautiful header with 18 minutes left to carry an Ecuadorean team that dominated midfield and held its on defense against a team that is expected to go far in next month's World Cup in the United States.
The Argentines made several dangerous attacks, orchestrated by the precise passing of Diego Maradona, but without hitting the mark.
''We didn't play well and they beat us good,'' Argentine coach Alfio Basile said. ''We are trying and, well, we lost. The players are tired.''
Tenorio headed the ball to the right of goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea following a throw-in from Ivo Ron.
In the 21st minute, Argentina's Dario Franco headed the ball toward the goal but it was intercepted by Ecuador goalkeeper Jacinto Espinoza. In the 44th, Claudio Caniggia of Argentina swept into the penalty area but the goalie narrowly deflected the shot with his right foot.
Caniggia again attacked in the 66th minute, but Espinoza denied him once more. In the 75th minute, Espinoza detoured a shot by Oscar Ruggeri.
Argentina, the World Cup champion in 1978 and 1986 and runner-up in 1990, plays in a first-round group with Bulgaria, Greece and Nigeria.
