BALTIMORE (AP) _ The Baltimore Orioles signed designated hitter Harold Baines to a one-year contract on Friday. The team did not announce the terms of the deal.

Baines, 38, batted .301 in 44 games with the Orioles last season. He began the year with the Chicago White Sox.

Baines has 191 home runs and 792 RBIs.

``He provides us with a veteran left-handed bat and he has always proved to be a very positive influence in the clubhouse,'' said Orioles General Manager Pat Gillick.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Baines, the team designated third baseman Willis Otanez for assignment.
