ANSONIA, Conn. (AP) _ A fire raged through a latex plant downtown Monday, and officials were concerned a towering plume of black smoke could contain toxic chemicals.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The blaze at the 10-acre, 284,000-square-foot Latex Foam Products Inc. facility prompted evacuations of surrounding downtown buildings. Children at Ansonia schools were being kept inside with the windows and doors closed.

Fire and police departments from several surrounding communities were assisting, and state Department of Environmental Protection officials were called to the scene.

The plant manufactures foam mattresses, pillows and makeup applicators and employs about 220 people, according to the company's Web site.
